Potter, Dennis
   b. 1935, Forest of Dean; d. 1994
   Playwright
Dennis Potter is the outstanding ‘author’ of serious television drama (see drama on television), with over forty works to his credit. From the early Stand Up, Nigel Barton (1965) to plays of his maturity such as Pennies From Heaven (1978) and Blue Remembered Hills (1979), Potter arrested attention with his individualistic world view and experimentation with form. Continually dramatising aspects of his own predicament, Potter drew the key themes of sexuality, spirituality, vocation and nostalgia together most successfully in The Singing Detective (1985), endowing the protagonist with the crippling skin disease that had handicapped his own career.
From this time until his much publicized death from cancer, his writing becomes increasingly selfreferential and arguably produced more interesting television events than successful drama.
